Caves

We know of several caves on the farm.  These caves are really large, vertical rooms or chambers just below the surface. The most notable is the one underneath KK Road on the Monroe City Hill.  The "bump" in the road betrays its location.  Below is a 1982 article from the Waterloo Republican that tells the story.

In the late 1960's we discovered two cave chambers 75 yards above the Mill Spring, located side by side in the creek bed.   The openings were just large enough to squeeze through. We were able to lower extension ladders into the chambers.  Each is about 14'wide and 20' deep.  Unfortunately, the creek meanders and the openings are now obscured by 3 feet of sediment and rocks with trees growing above.  They are underneath the area I've turned into a parking station along the jeep trail. I've shown my kids the spot.  Who knows.  Maybe some day nature will again reveal them.

It is interesting to note that the hillside above these caves is pock marked with similar, but smaller  openings.  There could easily be more caves underneath.
